The end of St. Ignatius’ pilgrimage had little to do with what he himself had imagined at the beginning of his life. God’s ways did not let him stay in Jerusalem, but led him to Rome. There God made him experience in the depths of his soul that he must give his whole life to his service out of love, always following Christ who carries the cross. This is what Jesuits who have felt the call to follow the Lord in the style of St. Ignatius have tried to do ever since: to love God above all things and one’s neighbour as oneself, knowing that love must be put more in deeds than in words.
